I wanted to base this piece off a rhythm that is an interpretation of a cross between the train groove on Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express and the rhythm used on Throbbing Gristles's Dead On Arrival. The latter was probably the more predominant inspiration, but I wanted to take it in a different direction, more polarized between the edginess of the rhythm and a stately, relaxing wash of simple chord ambience behind it. Once I had those two dynamics working, I immediately heard a lonely piano lingering in the space created by that pairing and that sound obviously made me think of a cat sadly playing a piano with no one around to hear it. Poor little kitty. Don't give up your day job.
