about

Sometimes it’s useful to look for things that have been neglected or forgotten. In this case, a search through my virtual instrument plugins brought a little oddity called “Iris” into the picture. It’s been kicking around in the plugins folder of my DAW for ages, but I just never got around to doing anything with it. It’s some sort of audio sample manipulator and lets you morph and merge several samples into some unrecognizable outcome. I’m not one who has a great deal of patience when it comes to creating new sounds, so rather than spend hours meticulously crafting them, I prefer the more immediate process of seeing what’s at hand and then messing it about with some effects to give it my own little stamp of uniqueness. Ultimately it’s about the performance. That’s what really makes it unique. The sound itself is relatively arbitrary. People talk a lot about how the journey is what’s important and not so much the destination. The existential root of this view, I think, lies in the fact that there is no real destination. Rather, there’s only one destination and we’re all going there, so the journey really is the only thing that can differentiate us once the credits have run out on our little film.
