about

Beginning in the late 1960s and continuing through the next decade, the so-called “Krautrock” movement in Germany became responsible for breaking popular music away from the largely blues based templates which had dominated the culture since the rise of rock & roll in the mid 1950s. Post war youth in the country, desperate to distance themselves from the recent memory of fascism, were looking for a kind of sound which was not beholden to the past and was squarely focused on reinventing itself for the future. Artists such as Kraftwerk, NEU!, CAN, Cluster and Tangerine Dream embraced new sonic technologies inherent in the emergence of electronic instruments, pioneering the use of synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines. They also innovated in terms of performance techniques employed with the more conventional instruments such as guitars, keyboards, bass and drums. They developed new rhythmic models inspired by the machinery of the factory or like the “motorik” pattern, which was initially influenced by the rhythm of running, but which became synonymous with the motion of driving, particularly on the state of the art highways as exemplified by Germany’s Autobahn. Blues based chord progressions where discarded and supplanted with often more monotone driven melodic techniques and atonality became widespread as a means of adding texture and unexpected color to arrangements. Production techniques were also evolving beyond the basic use of recording studios, integrating the facility as a creative tool unto itself.

As these innovations spread beyond the boarders of Germany, their influence became integral to the development of alternative music styles around the globe. Everything from hip-hop to post punk & new wave to techno & acid house can trace its roots, through one branch or another, back to the music created in Germany in the 1970s. David Bowie, Iggy Pop & Brian Eno became ambassadors of this sound and bands like Hawkwind & Public Image Ltd used its cornerstones to build their own distinctive sounds.

The collection presented here represents how this influence has manifested within the work produced under the Blood ’n’ Tongue banner throughout the 21st century. It is a small glimpse into the most obvious inspirations and how they’ve revealed themselves over the years. So buckle up and hit the gas pedal as you head out on this journey through sound.
